HKBC's O'pen Bic Youth Sailing Team

Meet the HKBC O'pen Bic Team!

Hawaii Kai Boat Club has been successful in teaching over 100 children to sail in 2016. Of those sailors, a growing number are now advanced and ready to test their skills on the regional, national, and international stage.

By traveling to other race venues, the sailors gain experience in big fleet starts, and get exposure to different sailing and weather conditions, while they meet friends from around the globe who share their love for the sport.

The HKBC O'pen Bic Team is focused on competing in the 2017 O'pen Bic North American Championships in Sarasota, Florida in March 2017.  All HKBC Sailors who are Level 3 and above are welcome to sail in the regatta as part of Team HKBC. There are no restrictions to age or ability in this fun "Un-regatta" event.

At the event, nine participates will qualify to race as Team USA in the Endeavor Regatta in Bermuda in June where a total of 32 sailors will represent countries from around the world. The event will be televised on ESPN and take place during the America's Cup event.  The current HKBC Team signed up to compete in Sarasota are:

Over the years, the HKBC Youth Sailing Team has competed in several national and international events with some impressive results:

  • As Team Captain, Lars von Sydow lead the path by competing in the 2012 World Championships in Miami and the 2013 O'pen Bic World Championships in Italy. In these regattas he gained experience that he brought back to HKBC and shared with the young Team.
  • In 2014, seven HKBC sailors joined Lars at the O'pen Bic North American Championship in Bermuda. Lars earned 3rd Place Overall while his younger teammates swept the podium in the Under 13 division. The O'pen Bic community took notice of HKBC across the globe!
  • In 2015, nine sailors traveled to the O'pen BIC North American Championship in Miami. HKBC claimed 1st & 2nd Overall and in the U13 Division.  Plus the 2 Top Girl titles, U13 and Open, were won by HKBC sailors.
  • In 2015, nine HKBC sailors competed in their 1st  World Championships in Australia with Lars who had experience in 2 past world championships. Lars placed 2nd in the U19 Division, while three other HKBC sailors placed in the Top 20!
  • In 2016, HKBC was represented by three U13 sailors at the North American Championships in Charleston, South Carolina. JP Lattanzi placed 1st in U13 Division and 2nd Overall, while his teammates Kona Carle and Thomas Busch placed 4th and 6th in the U13 Division.
  • Most recently, four HKBC sailors represented the USA in Quiberon, France at the O'pen Bic World Cup. More than 230 competitors competed from around the globe. Lars won 1st Place in the U19 Male Division! His teammates, Gavin Ball-8th, Kanoa Pick-9th, and Marcos Baez-18th raced against a fleet of 134 in the U16 Division.  They also raced in the Team Competition where combined points are counted racing in 3-boy/1 girl teams. Lars joined an international team and won 2nd, while 3 HKBC sailors joined a female sailor from Poland and placed 7th.

The sailors will be fundraising to help pay expenses to race.  Any support including airline mileage, accommodation points, or monetary donation would be greatly appreciated!  The sailors are very excited for this opportunity to represent Hawaii in March, and see if they can qualify to represent the USA in Bermuda in June.

Mahalo for your support!!
